On Friday, May 22nd, the Iranian leader Ayatolah Ali Khamenei again threatened the Jewish State with genocide. In the course of a speech given to mark al-Quds Day (Jerusalem Day), the annual Tehran hate festival commemorating  the recapture of Jerusalem by the IDF in 1967, the Islamic extremist Khamenei called Israel a “cancerous tumor” which he said needed to be “uprooted and destroyed.” Faced with polite condemnation from Germany and other EU states for the violent threat, Iran defended the malicious comment claiming it was not aimed at all Jews “just Israelis.”

When US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blasted Khamenei and said he was “echoing Hitler’s call for genocide”, the Iranian leader tweeted that he seeks Israel’s destruction but not the annihilation of all Jews. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also tweeted a response to the Iranian leader, advising him that: “He should know that any regime that threatens Israel with extermination will find itself in similar danger”.

He should know that any regime that threatens Israel with extermination will find itself in similar danger,” Netanyahu wrote on his official Twitter feed in Hebrew

On numerous occasions in the past, Tehran and the Islamic leadership have openly threatened to destroy Israel and “burn Tel-Aviv.” On none of these episodes has the UN Secretary General ever made any effort to reproach Iran nor warn the its leadership that these statements are in violation of the UN Charter and  Tehran’s membership in the World Body could be suspended or cancelled. Indeed Khamenei knows that 75 years after the Shoah ended, he can openly threaten genocide against the Jewish people and there will barely be any response much less any price to be paid internationally. In fact, the Iranian regime is confident that Israel will not retaliate in response to its threat of destruction because of the massive rocket arsenal being pointed at Israeli communities by Iran’s proxy terrorist group, Hezbollah in South Lebanon.

Threats of genocide against Jews by the EU’s great trading partner, Iran have become a commonplace occurrence in recent years with only token condemnations being routinely expressed by western countries. The message to Tehran is very clear – you can menace Israel with destruction and we will still continue to buy your oil and consider you a valuable commercial market for the EU.

According to Shurat HaDin President Nitsana Darshan-Leitner: “What is shocking is not that the rogue regime in Tehran threatens Jews but that they are permitted to do it on Twitter a publicly traded corporation in San Francisco.  In what other respectable communication forum on earth would one state be permitted to make violent threats against Jews and other minorities and not have their accounts deleted?  Instead of demanding prohibitions of the hate speech and terrorist incitement spewing from the social media platforms, American elected officials ignore the blanket immunity from liability and prosecution the internet giants such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube claim they have.  All genocides begin with the sort of hate speech and racist incitement to violence Khamenei regularly posts on his account. If no one else is going to pursue this issue of Iranian leaders threatening Israel, the Jewish community is going to have to move powerfully forward against the social media platforms themselves.”
